Lynchburg falls in the transition zone, so cool-season, warm-season, or a blend of both can work here. The first step in understanding how to care for your lawn is knowing your grass type. Here in the Burg, you probably have one of these:
Mow your lawn only during the growing season. For warm-season grasses, that will be in the spring and summer, and for cool-season grasses, in the spring and fall. Mow only dry grass –– mowing it wet invites diseases and fungus.
Water your lawn in the morning before 9 a.m. to avoid evaporation. Cool-season grasses need an inch to inch and a half of water per week, so water 2-3 times weekly. Warm-season grasses need a half inch to an inch per week, so water 1-2 times weekly.
Fertilize your lawn according to your grass type’s needs. Cool-season grasses benefit from a treatment twice in the fall, between September and November, then again in the spring, between April and May. Warm-season grasses should be fertilized when they’re actively growing, typically in the early spring, late spring, and late summer.
